Weak Hero – Review
6 out of 10
Last night, I binged the entire season of a series. I’m not sure why the hell Netflix — or maybe some other streaming platform — has been trying to get me into South Korean shows lately. Yesterday, I gave in. I admit, I’m easy to win over — but beyond that, this series kept me awake.
Lately, I’ve been drawn to things that feel far removed from my everyday life. Weak Hero showed me a world that’s distant from mine, made up of people and dynamics I’m not used to. At its core, the story revolves around a group of high school students who find themselves spiraling into a violent, unstoppable chain of events.
For me, the show became a sort of metaphor: it’s what might happen in every corner of the world if bullies, aggressors, and power-hungry thugs were constantly challenged head-on by those deemed weaker — or those who just appear to be. The lonely, the outsiders.
The story is simple, maybe even predictable at times, but it has charm — especially in its original language. I’ll always appreciate a good fight scene, especially when the bad guys get what they deserve. The world doesn’t really work like that though. And maybe, as I thought while watching the final episode, there’s a reason for that. If it did, we’d probably be extinct. Maybe it takes those who endure without ever throwing a punch to keep certain balances in place.
The characters are strongly defined — maybe even too much, from my point of view. They come off as exaggerated, larger-than-life, but still grounded enough to be understood. It’s not a show for everyone, but it deserves to exist — no doubt about that.
In the end, the “good guy” gets a few moments of satisfaction, which definitely raised my personal rating. I’d give it a 6 out of 10. The fight scenes could’ve been better — not enough broken bones or blood, considering how much they beat each other up. And no real female presence — sure, there’s one female character, but not the kind that makes your head turn, if you know what I mean.
Call me old school, but for this kind of series, certain elements are essential.
